Fellows
in Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE)
At the 1996 5th World Biomaterials
Congress in Toronto, the International Liaison
Committee of the World's Biomaterials Societies (now the
IUS-BSE) introduced the first awardees of the title "Fellow
in Biomaterials Science and Engineering",
abbreviated FBSE. This honour designates
to the community at large that these individuals have contributed
significantly to biomaterials as a discipline and that they
should be recognized internationally as experts in the field.
Together they form a College of Fellows and have undertaken
some projects deemed to be of mutual, international importance.
By mutual agreement of the constituent
societies, the international Clemson Awardees (named over
the years by the Society for Biomaterials, U.S.) were made
the first group of fellows. Subsequent fellows were to be
nominated by each constituent society at their discretion
(every 4 years), but the total number was not to exceed
a very small percentage of the society's membership.
The CBS/SCB nominated three new fellows
in 1996 and again in 2000. These were approved by the IUS-BSE
and presented at the World Congresses in Toronto and Hawaii.
The next round of nominations will be made
by each IUS-BSE society, one year in advance of the World
Biomaterials Congress. The nomination process is handled
by the Canadian members of the College of Fellows
(see
below), but may be instigated by any member
of the CBS/SCB. FBSE nominations are open to all qualified
biomaterials scientists and engineers.
To become a fellow, the current CBS members
of the IUS-BSE should be contacted with the CV of the interested
individual or the nominated party. After an initial review
of the candidate, the individual is submitted to the Board
of Directors of the Society. Upon Board approval, the candidate's
nomination is forwarded to the IUS-BSE, which is the organization
responsible for the selection of the fellow.
